Dynamic Range
Posted on March 9, 2010 with 0 commentsDynamic Range -- simply put, how much the volume levels vary across a song -- is a key ingredient to a great composition and mix: how the tune builds, the effect of breakbeats and rousing climaxes. But in the fight for listeners immediate attention, commercial production/mastering is employing extreme compression to reduce the dynamic range, to grab listeners attention away from the competition, the "loudness wars".
There are a couple of campaigns running to protest against this trend, which are worth supporting, but needless to day, Markovich/A.M.P. always delivers a full dynamic range, maybe even too much!
